6.38. File-4.20

The File package contains a utility for determining the type of a given file or files.

6.38.1. Installation of File

Apply a patch to fix a bug caused by an undefined constant:

patch -Np1 -i ../file-4.20-reg_startend-1.patch

Prepare File for compilation:

./configure --prefix=/usr --disable-static

Compile the package:

make

This package does not come with a test suite.

Install the package:

make install

Installed programs: file

Installed library: libmagic.so

file	Tries to classify each given file; it does this by performing several tests—file system tests, magic number tests, and language tests
`libmagic`	Contains routines for magic number recognition, used by the file program
