Problems with ARCH in current Makefiles

I tried that solution (ARCH="" make mrproper) but that resulted in:

Makefile:530: /lfs-livecd/packages/linux/linux-2.6.12.5/arch//Makefile: 
No such file or directory

What did work was the following:

unset ARCH ; make mrproper

It is after midnight here so I am off to bed.  If this solution is ok 
with you also, I will add in the morning.
