TITLE: Installing XFree86-4.2.0 with DRI and Glide LFS VERSION: All AUTHOR: Luke A. Guest SYNOPSIS: This hint basically shows how to install XFree86-4.2.0 with DRI and Glide support without the hassle the other hints go to. HINT: 1) Firstly, you'll need to download the correct packages. * Get the X420src-1.tgz, X420src-2.tgz & X420src-1.tgz from ftp.xfree86.org, also get the 4.2.0-libGLU-bad-extern.patch from the fixes directory. * From http://dri.sourceforge.net/res.phtml, download: 1) An X config file. 2) The glide3headers.tgz archive. 3) A libglide3.so for your platform. 2) Then you'll need to get the current Glide source out of CVS. cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@cvs.glide.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/glide login cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonymous@cvs.glide.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/glide \ co glide3x cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonymous@cvs.glide.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/glide \ co swlibs mv swlibs glide3x/ tar -cvzpf glide3x-cvs.tgz glide3x 3) Install the Glide headers and library: cd /usr/include && tar -xzpf glide3headers.tar.gz && cp libglide3.so /usr/lib/ 4) Extract the X sources and apply the patch: cd /usr/src && tar -xvpf X420src-1.tgz && tar -xvpf X420src-2.tgz && tar -xvpf X420src-3.tgz && patch -p2 < 4.2.0-libGLU-bad-extern.patch 5) Create a host.def file: cp xc/config/cf/xf86site.def xc/config/cf/host/def Now edit this file setting up preferences, I used the standard stuff and added some extra defines from the other hints. 6) Compile: make World 2>&1 | tee compile.log Check for errors and compile again if there are any. N.B: The makefile will clean the directory of any compiled binaries every time, so you may need to edit the makefile to fix this. 7) Install X: pushd config && make install && cd ../include && make install && cd ../programs && make install && cd ../fonts && make install && cd ../lib && make install && cd ../doc && make install && popd 8) Compile NLS support: export PATH=$PATH:/usr/X11R6/bin cd nls && xmkmf && make && make install 9) Set up the symbolic links: ln -s /usr/X11R6/include/X11 /usr/include/X11 ln -s /usr/X11R6/lib/X11 /usr/lib/X11 I'm really not sure if you actually nedd the lib one. 10) Recompile Glide: Follow the dri hint at this point and you should have a nice new version of Glide installed. 11) Configure X: You really should use the sample config to get this working, or you could use one of the tools. I used my existing X config and changed the mouse as I don't have USB working yet. 12) Test your X installation: startx Inside one of the xterm's type: glxinfo This should tell you whether you have a successfully installed DRI enabled X server; also: glxgears Should give you an indication of the speed of OpenGL. That's it.
